Tales of Funding – Fashion Icon Ralph Lauren

This week’s Entertainment Pioneer is American Fashion Designer Ralph Lauren.  Born in The Bronx, New York to immigrant Jewish Parents, Lauren’s mark on the Fashion World was a long road from his earliest days of sharing a bedroom with two of his brothers.

He began working after-school as early as 12 in order to buy expensive suits and look the part of his dreams of becoming rich.  As a college student, instead of attending Fashion Design School, he studied business at Baruch College in Manhattan, where he dropped out after two years and joined the Army.   After his discharge, Lauren began as a student again by night and held stints as a Salesman for Brooks Brothers and a tie manufacturer named A. Rivetz & Co., which is where he began the empire he leads today.

While working at A. Rivetz & Co., he started creating ties under his own design and with a $50,000 loan, founded Polo Fashions in 1968.  By 2007 and with still around 90% of his Company’s voting power, Lauren operated about 275 retail and outlet stores and 35 boutique stores across the U.S.  In 2010, the Financial Times reported the firm had revenues of 5Bln for the fiscal year of 2009 whiles Forbe’s estimated Lauren’s net worth near $4.2 billion in 2008.

You will accept to attempt and outshine the blow in adjustment to ensure that you angle out from the army - which is the lot of important abstraction for fashion school.
